"Then I saw." "I saw." Both of our Scripture readings today use those words. It might be easy to miss their significance. In both cases they mark transformative experiences and major turning points in the story of faith. "Then I saw;" when we read those words we know something big is going on.
"In a trance I saw a vision," Peter said to the apostles in Jerusalem. To really understand the significance of Peter's vision we need to know the rest of the story. Peter had been staying in the city of Joppa with Simon the tanner. In itself, this was highly unusual. Tanners cured the skins of animals --- to state
Welcome to Holy Humor Sunday. This particular observation is new to me, and probably new to many of you. It is actually an ancient tradition, rooted in the earliest days of Christianity. Theologians like Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa and John Chrysostom noted that on Easter Sunday God played the ultimate practical joke on the devil by raising Jesus from death. They talked about the Easter laugh.
Holy Humor Sunday is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday of Easter which would have been April 3 this year. A Low Sunday became Bright Sunday.
It is such a joy to welcome our friends from Lapwai who have come here today to help us observe Native American Awareness Sunday. I'm ashamed to say that is a day we've often ignored– I hope never again. It is also a joy to welcome you as we build a relationship together.
A number of us had the privilege of worshiping with you on February 21. We also had the joy of feasting with you. Those of you who didn't go with us missed a great meal. We had cedar plank salmon, roast pork, and a vast array of other dishes. We came home both spiritually and physically fed.
This all began when the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference met in June of 2015. The Annual Conference is the regional body of the United Methodist Church. Our General Conference, or the global arm of the church, had mandated that every Annual Conference observe an Act of Repentance for the
Today is a day of great joy for this congregation as we install Andrew Crossler as our new Music Director. The baton has passed from father to son, as he succeeds his father, Tom, who served faithfully in this position for 27 years and retired last December. Andy has been our interim director for the last three months. We also interviewed another qualified candidate. In the end Andy was the clear choice, a slam dunk, just the right fit for our church.
Andy grew up in the music program of this church. He began playing bells as a little boy at the time the
What a joy it is to be here this morning surrounded by flowers and hearing the overtones of the bells. Happy Easter.
By all rights, we should be out at the cemetery with the gravestones spaced out around us in somber array, and maybe one of those green tents set up over an open hole in the ground. That's where we should be, because Easter began in a cemetery – or at least at a tomb. Sometimes communities do hold Easter sunrise services at cemeteries, though typically more people show up at the church where there are comfortable pews, less chill in the air, and no muddy ground to stain your good shoes.
Easter began in a graveyard. You know the story: Jesus had been killed, nailed to a cross – a
Sunday morning parking at the church is available in the high school parking lot on Third Street across from the church and in the city lots west of the church. These lots are available only on Sunday mornings. A small lot for handicapped parking is available just off of Adams Street on the north side of the church, with an accessible entrance directly into the sanctuary. A lift operates between the Fellowship Hall (3rd Street level) and the Sanctuary. William Sound System Receivers and Headsets are available to assist with hearing problems.
